Mountain Heroes

One of the most famous female rock climbers in the world, Steph Davis was only the second woman in history to free climb El Capitan in the Sierra Nevada (pictured) in a day, and the first to ascend the Salathé Wall. “I love being in the mountains because I feel happiest in natural, pure places where my direction comes from the elements,” she says.

In this portrait, rock climber and businessman Yvon Chouinard can be seen sorting his equipment before a climb. Chouinard set up the outdoor clothing and equipment company Patagonia in 1972, and is credited with several important advances in climbing technology.

Adrian Hayes, In the footsteps of Wilfred Thesiger

Adrian Hayes, who has won two Guinness world records for his polar expeditions, is currently making a 1,500 km journey across the Arabian desert, in honour of the legendary "barefoot explorer" Wilfred Thesiger (pictured). Thesiger journeyed across the region in the 1940s, and was the first European to ever visit certain areas.
